Water Level Sensors - Shaft Encoders


The AMASSER Incremental Shaft Encoder is an intelligent and reliable microprocessor-based incremental shaft encoder which may be used with a pulley, tape, and float arrangement to measure stream stage or other fluid levels. Our Water Level Sensors are shaft encoder based, providing fluid level tracking with a resolution of 1/400th of a revolution of the pulley installed, that is, with a 1.230ft./375mm circumference pulley the resolution is just 0.003075ft. or just less than a millimetre ( 0.9375mm ). The sensed data is provided serially via the standard SDI-12, SDI-12/RS485, ModBus-RTU serial protocols. The level may also be optionally transmitted as a 4-20mA Current Loop using our 4-20ma. current loop option on the PSE/RTU/D Product.

PSE-SDI Water Level Shaft Encoder

The standard unit, the PSE-SDI, provides data by means of a SDI-12 cable (see  SDI-12 Protocol) connected to a Data Collection Platform (DCP) or personal computer. "Rev D" units, and later, are configurable to either standard SDI-12, RS485-based SDI-12. The RS485-based SDI-12 allows communications up to 4000 feet!

PSE SDI-12 with Display Sensor

PSE-SDI/D Shaft Encoder with Display

The display unit, the PSE-SDI/D provides data by means of a SDI-12 cable connected to a Data Collection Platform (DCP) or personal computer. In addition to the features included in the standard PSE-SDI unit are those provided by the "\D" option; an 8-digit display with two SPDT ( momentary) switches that provide an additional human interface along side of the SDI-12 communications. This 8 digit 5x7 led digital display enables the user to display and set up parameters without the need for a DCP or portable computer to be connected. The setup parameters available are as follows: the offset and scale of the encoder as well as the node address for SDI-12 communications. Note that the display also allows the user to enter the password that is required to access the setup parameters. When not setting these parameters the display provides the instanteous position of the encoder, i.e. the water level over a distance of 4000 feet on single or dual twisted pair cable.        Buy Now!    Download Data Sheet

PSE ModBus-RTU with Display Sensor

PSE-RTU/D Shaft Encoder with Display

The PSE/RTU provides its sensed data to the Data Collection Platform (DCP), personal computer programmable controller or other host device directly by means of the ModBUS RTU Protocol. The PSE/RTU/D accumulates position data up to 2500 times per second to ensure accurate tracking of the shaft. The standard PSE/RTU communicates via ModBUS RTU communications protocol by means of an RS485 driver thus allowing support up to 250 modules across 4000 feet of specific cable consisting of two twisted pairs.

4-20ma. Option

The optional 4-20ma. current loop interface is available on the PSE/RTU and requires only a single or a dual twisted pair cable to provide data to the master over a distances up to 4000 feet.

PTape - 15/30 meters   50/100 feet


The stainless steel tapes are 3/8 in. in width and are graduated in both metric and imperial units and are punched along their centerline at 125mm center to center spacing. Available in 50/15 (PTAPE-50/15) or 100/30 (PTAPE-100/30) metres in length. When ordered with our PSE-SDI shaft encoder, the pulley is mounted on the insulating hub of the PSE shaft encoder thus providing the sensor's electronics with electrical isolation from the water.     Buy Now!

We provide the off-the-shelf solutions such as the one shown as well as custom engineered solutions: The PCOM-SDI: In its standard configuration it provides an interface between a RS232 device (eg. computer) and a SDI-12 sensor(s). The PCOM-SDI, as SDI-12 master controller, provides for auto data-buffer retrieval and setup of SDI-12 sensors by means of simple ASCII drivers on your RS232 host. The host is relieved of all SDI-12 timings restraints.
